The Atlanta City Council on Tuesday approved a resolution calling on state lawmakers to repeal a prohibition on cities and counties to impose rent controls.

The measure is merely a request and has no binding effect. But it notes that affordable housing is a critical need in the city and that from May 2013 to May 2019, the median rent for a one-bedroom rental unit increased just over $1,100 per month to over $1,600 per month.

The resolution was sponsored by Councilman Antonio Brown.
