Life without parole, plus 15, given for 2013 Cobb bar killing

A Canton man will spend the rest of his life in prison for killing a man inside a Cobb County bar.

Dennis Lee Hampton, 43, was sentenced Thursday to life in prison without parole plus 15 years in connection with the April 7, 2013, shooting death of Takilam Terrell, a 34-year-old Sandy Springs resident. Hampton — one of three suspects charged in the case — was convicted in March on charges including malice murder, felony murder and aggravated assault.

Authorities believe Terrell was arguing with his girlfriend that night inside Milo's Bar, a now-closed establishment on Garrison Road in Marietta. According to the Cobb County District Attorney's office, a security guard was "quelling that disturbance" when Hampton's cousin "escalated it," leading Hampton to get involved, pull out a 9mm handgun and fire at Terrell.

“While the defense may ask for mercy today, the defendant extended none on April 7, 2013,” Deputy Chief Assistant District Attorney Jesse Evans said during Thursday’s sentencing, according to a news release.

Hampton was sentenced as a recidivist, the district attorney’s office said, because he had two prior felony convictions.

Charges are still pending against Joseph Ricky Hampton and Trina Lesley Chatman — the Hamilton’s cousin and that cousin’s wife — for their alleged roles in Terrell’s death.
