2 killed in Suwanee wreck identified

Suwanee police Thursday identified the two people killed in a Wednesday night wreck that closed a major Gwinnett County roadway for several hours as David Dowdy, 47, of Bogart, and Jean Strickland, 79, of Suwanee.

Officers were called to the intersection of McGinnis Ferry and Scales roads moments after the 6 p.m. wreck occurred, according to Capt. Cass Mooney with Suwanee police.

“It looks like the vehicle crossed the center line,” Mooney told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “It happened at an intersection where there’s a break in the median.”

Dowdy, who was driving an Oldsmobile was killed after allegedly striking another vehicle head-on, killing Strickland, who was a passenger in the second car.

A portion of McGinnis Ferry Road, between Peachtree Industrial Boulevard and Buford Highway, was expected to remain closed for several hours Wednesday night during the investigation, Mooney said.

Detours were in place to allow traffic to continue moving through the area, he said. But drivers were asked to avoid the area, if possible.

It was not immediately known if alcohol or speed were factors in the wreck.
