A 38-year-old man was killed in a two-vehicle wreck Tuesday afternoon in Cherokee County, according to police.

The wreck happened shortly after 5 p.m. on Ga. 372 near Hogan Pond Lake in Ball Ground, according to Tim Cavender with the Cherokee fire department.

Investigators believe Douglas Perry Patterson, of Douglasville, was driving southbound on Ga. 372 in a red Hyundai Elantra when he ran off the west shoulder, over-corrected, and crossed the center line, the Georgia State Patrol said Wednesday.

A Lexus IS 300 traveling northbound struck the Elantra on the passenger side, the GSP said. Patterson died at the scene.

The 23-year-old woman driving the black Lexus was critically injured, but is expected to survive, Cavendar said. Alexandra T. Johansen, of Jasper, was taken to North Fulton Hospital.

The wreck temporarily blocked both lanes of the highway. The Georgia State Patrol is investigating, but no charges are expected.
