Professional athlete Tim Tebow married former Miss Universe Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters in a romantic wedding in Cape Town, South Africa.

The ceremony took place at sunset, and it incorporated American and South African decorations and traditions, according to ABC News. The wedding featured  white, gold, green and black colors with the La Paris Estate as the background.

"I've been looking forward to three things: the first moment I see her in her wedding dress, the first kiss, and the first dance together as man and wife. It's such a special night." — Tim Tebow told People

Tebow and Nel-Peters dated since July 2018, at which point Tebow had already made the switch from NFL quarterback to professional baseball player.

Tebow started his career as the Florida Gators’ starting quarterback in 2007. He won the Heisman Trophy in 2007 and was drafted by the Denver Broncos after college in 2010. Six years later, he started pursuing a baseball career. He currently plays as an outfielder for the Syracuse Mets.

"She is a really special girl, and I am very lucky and blessed for her coming into my life," Tebow told ESPN. "I am usually very private with these things, but I am very thankful."

Nel-Peters is best known for winning Miss Universe in 2017 after representing South Africa in the pageant.

She and Tebow started dating after a meet-cute at a Christian charity event hosted by the Tim Tebow Foundation. The event holds proms for people with special needs. Nel-Peters attended the prom with her younger sister who suffered with cerebellar agenesis. According to Tebow, the connection was “instant.”

"We've found such a deep love," Nel-Peters shared in an interview with People.

She and Tebow got engaged less than a year later, in January 2019. She posted on Instagram, “Any dreams I’ve ever had, you’ve exceeded them all! I love you and I can’t wait to spend forever with you! @timtebow 💍❤️”

About 260 guests attended the couple’s wedding.

While they had a registry, Tebow and Nel-Peters requested that friends and family donate to the Tim Tebow Foundation instead of buying traditional household gifts.

"Something we really believe in is using any opportunity you have to help fight for people who can't fight for themselves. It's been my life mission since I was 5 years old," said Tebow, according to Good Morning America. "So when we started doing the planning, incorporating an option for our guests to donate to the Tim Tebow Foundation in lieu of a traditional gift was a non-negotiable for both of us."

While the couple chose not to live together prior to the wedding day, after the engagement Nel-Peters relocated to New York City,  where they plan to make their home.
