An Indiana man died Friday night after he and a friend were swept into Lake Michigan by a heavy wave, the Northwest Indiana Times reported.

Slater Harkleroad, 20, of Union Mills, was pronounced dead at a Michigan City hospital, the newspaper reported.

According to police, Harkleroad and John Simmons, 22, of LaPorte, were walking on the breakwall at the Michigan City Lighthouse when waves approximately 10 to 15 feet high knocked them in the water, the Times reported, citing a release from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.

Hammon swam back to the breakwall and threw a life ring into the water for Harkleroad but the man did not surface, the newspaper reported. Harkleroad was pulled out of the water by the Coast Guard, the Times reported.
