A Houston police sergeant was arrested and charged with murder Saturday in connection with the shooting death of his wife, the Houston Chronicle reported.

Hilario R. Hernandez, 56, of Pearland, was arrested in Kingsville, southwest of Corpus Christi, the newspaper reported. Houston Police Department spokeswoman Jodi Silva confirmed that Hernandez works for the department, the Chronicle reported.

Hernandez was considered a person of interest after the body of Belinda Hernandez was found at their Pearland home shortly after noon Saturday, KTRK reported. A family member found the woman's body and called police. She reportedly died of a gunshot wound, the television station reported.

The Pearland Independent School District confirmed that Belinda Hernandez was the librarian at Shadycrest Elementary School, the Chronicle reported.

In a statement, school district officials said they were "deeply saddened" to learn of Belinda Hernandez's death, KHOU reported.

“Mrs. Hernandez was a beloved, longtime employee who worked for Pearland ISD for 15 years,” the statement read. “Pearland ISD will provide counselors for students and staff for as long as needed.

"Please keep our Shadycrest family and the Hernandez family in your prayers.”

The couple had been married more than three decades and had two grown children, the Chronicle reported.
