A Gwinnett County police dog who went missing Saturday morning after chasing another animal has been located, authorities said.

The dog, K-9 Brix, went missing in Lawrenceville about 1 a.m. after becoming distracted and running away from his handler near the county’s fueling station on Winder Highway, Gwinnett police spokeswoman Sgt. Michele Pihera said.

Officers spent hours searching through woods, neighborhoods and along roadways for the 7-year-old Belgian Malinois. A police helicopter and members of the Lawrenceville Police Department also joined in the search.

K-9 Brix was later discovered near the gas station by an animal control officer who stopped to fill up, Pihera said. The dog was taken to the Gwinnett County Animal Shelter and reunited with officers about 9:45 a.m.
