A five year veteran of the Gwinnett County Police department has resigned in lieu of being fired after being charged with simple assault and disorderly conduct after he was a passenger in a hit and run wreck.

Ryan Head was arrested by officers from his own department on Saturday a short time after the hit and run, according to Gwinnett police.

Police said they were called by a witness who followed the vehicle as it fled. The witness followed the vehicle into a cul-de-sac and blocked it in. Witnesses reported that Head left the vehicle, produced a handgun and tapped on the witness’ window with it. There was no physical confrontation, no shots were fired, and the weapon was not pointed directly at any person.

GCPD officers arrived and took Head into custody. According to police, he was belligerent, but did not physically resist arrest. He was booked into the Gwinnett County Detention Center and has since been released on bond.

The Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council will be notified of this arrest and the results of the investigation when it is concluded.
