The cat, originally named Tardar Sauce, died of a urinary tract infection, The New York Times reported.

"Besides being our baby and a cherished member of the family, Grumpy Cat has helped millions of people smile all around the world — even when times were tough," according to the cat's official Twitter account.

The cat, from Arizona, became an internet favorite six years ago after the brother of her owner Tabatha Bundesen, posted a photo on Reddit and labeled it, "Meet grumpy cat," NBC News reported.

The photo has been used as a meme on social media countless times since.

Grumpy Cat was one of the most-followed animals on social media, with more than 8.5 million followers on Facebook, ABS-CBN reported.
