A Colquitt County jailer has been charged with aggravated assault involving use of force against an inmate.

Russell Harris was involved in a physical altercation with an inmate, identified as Bobby Ellerson, on June 27, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. Ellerson was treated for injuries at a local hospital as a result of a fight with Harris and another inmate.

During that investigation, the GBI said Colquitt Sheriff Rod Howell learned Harris was involved in a separate use-of-force incident with another inmate March 13.

Howell, according to the GBI, requested the agency investigate that incident as well.

Besides one count of aggravated assault, Harris is also charged with one count of violation of oath of office. He turned himself in to the Colquitt County Jail on July 6.
