A South Georgia shooting suspect was killed by police Friday morning after firing at officers as they investigated the earlier assault, according to the GBI.
The state agency was called to Albany shortly after midnight to investigate the police shooting on West Mercer Avenue near Albany State University and the city’s downtown area, the GBI said on Twitter.
“The incident stemmed from an aggravated assault that left one man seriously injured,” the GBI said Friday morning.
According to investigators, one man was taken to the hospital with a gunshot wound. Albany police identified the suspect as Kortnee Lashon Warren, 23, of Virginia, but said he was not at the scene when they arrived.
“While officers were investigating the incident, Warren appears on scene with a gun in hand,” the GBI said in a news release. “(Albany) officers gave verbal commands for Warren to drop the gun. During the incident, Warren pointed the gun at officers and fired shots at them.”
Police returned fire, striking Warren, officials said. He was taken to a hospital, where he later died. No officers were injured in the exchange of gunfire.
The man Warren was accused of shooting was taken to a hospital in Macon, according to the GBI.
Friday’s incident is the 32nd officer-involved shooting the agency has investigated this year, and the 14th to end in death. The AJC also tracks officer-involved shootings that don’t involve the GBI, and those numbers sometimes differ from the GBI’s tally.
