The search for an elusive fugitive who evaded arrest in Cherokee County on Tuesday is over, authorities said.

Billy Lee Owens, 36, allegedly stole a van as he avoided arrest in Woodstock. He was facing arrest in connection with weapons charges, according to U.S. Marshals Service spokesman Gavin Duffy.

Several K-9 units and helicopters joined the hunt for Owens, but did not find him.

A Marshals Service spokesman told Channel 2 Action News on Wednesday morning that Owens was later spotted in Lamar County, where he was involved in a police chase before getting away. Lamar County is about 100 miles south of Cherokee County.

Owens was wanted for a “wide range of violent crimes,” according to a news release from the Marshals Service. He has warrants in Fayette, Pike, Meriwether and Cherokee counties and an extensive criminal history, according to the release.
