A nationwide recall of frozen cooked, peeled and deveined shrimp has been expanded due to salmonella risks, according to the recall notice posted on the Food and Drug Administration website Friday.

The frozen shrimp products were distributed by Avanti Frozen Foods nationwide from November 2020 to this past May, according to the notice.

Salmonella are bacteria that can make people sick with diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps, according to the CDC. People can get salmonella infection through contaminated water or food, or by coming in contact with infected animals, their feces or their environment, the CDC states.

The products being recalled were sold at Target, Whole Foods, Food Lion and Meijer stores nationwide, the notice said.

As of this month, nine people have contracted salmonella-related illnesses associated with these cooked shrimp, according to the report.

Consumers who have purchased the recalled products are “urged not to consume the recalled product and to return them to the place of purchase,” according to the notice.
