Former Norcross High School standout and Alabama running back Alvin Kamara was arrested Thursday night on various traffic charges, police said.
Kamara, 19, of Norcross, was stopped on Jimmy Carter Boulevard for not wearing a seatbelt, according to a Gwinnett County police report. When the officer asked to see his driver’s license, Kamara said he didn’t have one, the report states.
“I asked why then was he driving,” the report states. “He stated he was driving because he was going to do laundry.”
Kamara did have an instructional permit, but was in the rental car alone. But a check of Kamara’s name turned up a suspended license for failing to appear in court, according to police.
Kamara was arrested and charged with not having a driver’s license, failure to appear, safety belts required and driving while license was suspended. He was booked into the Gwinnett County jail, where he was released early Friday after posting an $1,824 bond, records show.
Last month, Kamara, the AJC's Mr. Football 2012, announced he was transferring from Alabama after about six months. Kamara played running back at Norcross and signed with Alabama over UGA in February 2013. He was ranked as the nation's No. 1 all-purpose back, but ran into problems in college.
Kamara had a knee surgery during preseason practice, was not allowed to practice with the team during LSU game week for what Alabama coach Nick Saban called “behavior reasons,” and was suspended for the Sugar Bowl.
Several colleges have expressed interest in Kamara, according to reports.
