The future mayor -- Atlanta's first woman to hold the position -- headed up the city's Department of Cultural Affairs when this 1978 photo was taken.

April 9, 1965 -- Mayor Ivan Allen connects on the seventh pitch from Gov. Carl Sanders in the newly completed Atlanta Stadium.

Aug. 28, 1959 - Top Level Conference: Two mayors and a mayor's namesake get together at Grant Park Zoo. Brimingham mayor James Morgan was in town to visit the zoo and Lenox Square. He, Mayor Hartsfield and Willie B., the zoo's new gorilla, pose for the AJC's photographer.

Oct. 11, 1927 -- Col. Charles A. Lindbergh is greeted at Candler Field by local dignitaries on his first visit to Atlanta since flying solo across the Atlantic. Atlanta celebrated 'Lindbergh Day' as Lindbergh (center) poses with Georgia Gov. Lamartine Hardman (right) and Atlanta Mayor Isaac N. Ragsdale (left).

James L. Key first ran for mayor in 1904, finally winning the office in the 1918 election. During his second term, Key established the city's first Planning Commission and issued the bonds needed to build the Spring Street viaduct.

Serving as Mayor of Atlanta might seem like a sidenote in the biography of Asa Candler, who made his fortune as the co-founder of Coca-Cola, if his time in the office hadn't been so productive. He balanced the city budget and, when the Great Atlanta fire of 1917 destroyed 1,500 homes, took charge of coordinating rebuilding efforts.

Two Atlanta mayors are shown in these 1880s-era engraved portraits. Clockwise from left to right: W.A. Hemphill, Henry W. Grady, N.P.T. Finch, and Evan P. Howell of the Atlanta Constitution. Hemphill and Howell went on to serve in the office. Grady served as managing editor of the Constitution and Howell as its editor-in-chief during the 1880s. Hemphill founded the newspaper in 1868 and served as its publisher and business manager. Finch also held an interest in the paper during the time.

Current Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms is dealing with the effects of COVID-19, protests and riots and accusations of police brutaility -- all during her first term.
