As part of “Georgia Reads Aloud Day on Tuesday, a record 28,169 books were read at child care centers and public schools. The event, sponsored annually by Bright from the Start: Georgia Department of Early Care and Learning, promotes Gov. Nathan Deal’s goal of having all children reading on grade level by third grade. It’s also part of First Lady Sandra Deal’s “Read Across Georgia” initiative. Students at Lafayette Kids World Pre-K in Fayette County won a contest sponsored by DECAL to see how many books a classroom could read between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. Tuesday. Students at the center read 1,118 books and will receive a visit from the first lady and DECAL Commissioner Bobby Cagle.
