A U.S. Airways flight to Charlotte was delayed for about half an hour after a shipment of crabs escaped in the plane's cargo area, an airline spokesman confirmed.

Flight 890 was scheduled to leave LaGuardia Airport at 6:59 p.m. Thursday, but instead left at 7:25 p.m. due to "some seafood cargo problems," the spokesman said.

Multiple people on social media were reporting that crabs had gotten loose in the cargo hold.

Passengers couldn't believe it.

“Oh my God,” one traveler said. “That's nasty. Oh my God. That's why we were delayed?”

Passengers on the plane said they were told it was a mechanical error.

Later, the airline confirmed a small canister of crabs broke open and was quickly cleaned up, delaying the flight less than 30 minutes.
