A computer bag left on top of a garbage can prompted an investigation and shut down busy downtown streets Thursday night. But police determined the bag was empty and harmless.

Investigators were called to Peachtree and 4th streets around 7 p.m. and the area was temporarily blocked off, according to Sgt. Greg Lyon with Atlanta police.

“Someone noticed a laptop bag on top of a garbage can right there at the intersection,” Lyon told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

A bomb squad was called to the scene to check out the package, but it was determined to be harmless.

“There appeared to be nothing inside,” Lyon said.

The bag was discarded, this time for good. And the streets re-opened just before 9 p.m.
