Four people were injured Friday night when an elderly man possibly got his foot stuck on the gas pedal after a fireworks show in Rockmart, according to police.

An elderly man, whose name was not released, got in to his truck to leave when the crash happened, Rockmart police Chief Keith Sorrells said late Friday. The man ran over two people, hit two other people, then hit three cars before hitting a building, Sorrells said.

One person was flown to a hospital in critical condition, but the conditions of the other three people were not known.

The crash happened in a parking lot at Elm and Cherry streets, Sorrells said. Investigators had not determined late Friday what caused the man to hit the people.

People were gathered Friday night in downtown Rockmart to see the Homespun Festival fireworks display, which had been rescheduled from a previous date due to rain.

Located in Polk County, Rockmart is about 50 miles northwest of downtown Atlanta.
