Americans will have to compromise on attending in-person church services Easter Sunday and Easter egg hunts. For many, they will also have to make some exceptions for shopping, even for essentials, because many stores will be closed.
Several retailers who have enlisted their associates as frontline workers during the coronavirus outbreak have decided to give their workers a much-needed break April 12. Some stores, including Publix and Aldi, have traditionally closed on the holiday. However, stores such as Target are making the decision on behalf of their employees who have to work despite the pandemic.
Though Publix would typically be closed on Easter, store officials emphasized the importance of this business decision during a time of social distancing.
"Historically, we have this time off in order to allow our associates an opportunity to spend time with family and friends," Maria Brous, director of communications at Publix, told Today. "As we are in unprecedented times, we realize social distancing may change the way we celebrate, but we will remain closed for the holiday."
