A 39-year-old man was killed in a Tuesday morning wreck in Gordon County, one of 12 crashes that occurred within a 2-hour period.
While there was slush on the road, the Georgia State Patrol said driver error, not weather, was a major factor in the fatal wreck on Georgia 53 at Mount Olive Road.
About 6:15 a.m. Tuesday, Michael Drummond of Ellijay was driving a 2006 Ford 500 S westbound on Georgia 53 when he lost control of the vehicle, rotated counter-clockwise and was hit on the passenger side by a 2011 Chevrolet Silverado, the GSP said in a news release. Zachari Voges, who was behind the wheel of the Silverado, was treated at the scene and released.
GSP officials did not say anything in the release about charges against Voges, 24, of Fairmount.
Authorities in Gordon County responded to 11 other wrecks, most of them on Interstate 75, Chief Deputy Sheriff Robert Paris told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Paris said officials “are advising people here to avoid travel if possible.”
Gordon is nearly 70 miles northwest of Atlanta.
