Fans of Brooklyn-bred rapper Bobby Shmurda were convinced he would be released from prison as a long-awaited birthday gift Tuesday. Though he was not released, he did get some good news on his birthday.
The rapper, whose real name is Ackquille Pollard, did not return home Tuesday, but his parole hearing will occur later this month, a source told Complex magazine. The 26-year-old, known for his EP “Shmurda She Wrote,” pleaded guilty in September 2016 to conspiracy and weapons possession, after several arrests in 2014.
After an incident in June 2014, he was arrested in December 2014, along with 11 other people as part of a two-year investigation by the NYPD’s Brooklyn South Violence Reduction Task Force and the Office of the Special Narcotics Prosecutor’s Gang Unit. His imprisonment came right as his star was beginning to rise. His signature “Shmoney Dance,” was one of the first viral dances that brought to life the dance crazes that were first popular on Vine and now ubiquitous on TikTok.
On Tuesday, Complex reported the rapper will be up for a parole hearing Aug. 17, despite several folks online making predictions that he could have a chance for release on his birthday. His earliest date of parole would be Dec. 11. As is such with many New York State inmates, the parole hearing is set four months in advance of that date.
“Mr. Pollard is currently scheduled to appear before the Board of Parole the week of August 17, 2020,” a Department of Corrections and Community Supervision (DOCCS) official told Complex. “The Board of Parole has two weeks from the date of the interview with the incarcerated individual to render a decision.”
His birthday brought predictions about his release and celebrations online from those who hope to hear new music from him after he is no longer in prison. His mother posted a tender birthday tribute on Instagram in his honor.

Prior to his birthday, some fans anxiously awaited what they thought would be his release date.
