DeKalb police shoot, kill fake gun-wielding man

A man is dead following an officer-involved shooting early Friday at a DeKalb County apartment complex.

The shooting happened shortly after midnight at the Alden Ridge Apartments on Post Oak Drive near Clarkston.

DeKalb police interim Chief James Conroy told Channel 2 Action News that officers responded to reports of a man banging on apartment doors and yelling.

When officers confronted the suspect, “he produced a firearm and the officers yelled at him to drop the gun, which he refused,” Conroy told the station.

“At that point, he pointed the firearm at one of the officers and one of the officers fired several rounds, striking the suspect,” Conroy said.

The man, whose name has not been released, was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital, where he died.

Conroy told the station the suspect’s firearm turned out to be a fake gun.

“It appears to be a replica pistol, but the suspect was also armed with several knives,” Conroy said.

None of the officers were injured.
