Police in Statesboro said Tuesday that they have not yet determined what killed a Georgia Southern University student from Cumming late last week.

Channel 2 Action News reported that 18-year-old Brooke Edwards was found unresponsive in her off-campus apartment Friday, and was later pronounced dead.

Edwards was a sophomore biology student according to the university.

A candlelight vigil was held in the teen’s memory Monday night at the university.

Her cause of death remained a mystery Tuesday.

“We are awaiting autopsy and toxicology results from the GBI Medical Examiner and Crime Lab,” Statesboro police Cpl. Justin Samples told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Edwards, a 2013 graduate of North Forsyth High School, was the second Georgia Southern student from Forsyth County to die in Statesboro in recent weeks.

Grant James Spencer, 20, has been charged with felony murder in connection with Gatto’s death.
