Before officers could arrive, a man was dead behind the wheel Thursday night in southwest Atlanta.

The man, whose name was not released, had been shot multiple times inside a car near the intersection of Parsons and Webster streets, near the Atlanta University Center, according to Officer John Chafee with Atlanta police.

Officers were called to the scene around 6:30 p.m. and arrived to find a vehicle collision, Chafee said. The two victims were inside one of the vehicles.

A second man in the car was shot in the hand and transported to Grady Memorial Hospital, where he was in stable condition, Chafee said. Witnesses reported a possible third occupant who left the scene on foot and may have been injured, but that person had not been located late Thursday.

“The preliminary investigation indicates that a suspect approached and fired multiple times into the victim’s vehicle before fleeing the scene in a separate vehicle,” Chafee said in an emailed statement.
