A driver involved in a fatal pedestrian crash Monday afternoon on Atlanta’s Downtown Connector left the scene before police arrived, authorities said.

Officers were called to the northbound lanes of I-75/85 near the 14th Street bridge just before 1 p.m. after getting reports of a pedestrian hit by a car, Atlanta police said. The pedestrian, a man who was not publicly identified, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver who hit the man did not remain in the area, police said. Officials did not say why the victim was on foot on the interstate, but police opened an investigation into the circumstances around the crash.

Police shut down up to four northbound lanes of the Connector just south of the I-75/85 split. Multiple lanes were closed until about 3:30 p.m., causing traffic delays from Midtown all the way past the junction with I-20.

Atlanta police officers and Georgia State Patrol troopers were both on the scene of the crash just south of the I-75/85 split.
