A bystander was shot Tuesday while trying to run away from gunfire near a downtown Atlanta park, police said.

The incident happened shortly after 5 p.m. near MARTA’s Woodruff Park streetcar depot along Auburn Avenue. A police spokesman said the victim was wounded when an argument broke out between two people and escalated to gun violence.

The man, who was not involved in the argument, was shot in the leg while trying to run away, according to police. He was alert when he was taken to a hospital.

Officials did provide details on the circumstances that led to the shooting, and it was not clear Tuesday if a suspect had been identified.

MARTA officials said police activity near the Woodruff Park stop caused delays to streetcar operations along Auburn Avenue.
