Two people were arrested early Monday after fleeing the scene of a shooting on Atlanta’s Westside and crashing their car on an interstate ramp, police said.

Officers were investigating the gunfire in the Howell Mill Road shopping and nightlife district when they got reports of a single-car crash on the nearby ramp to I-75 South. The vehicle, a blue Dodge Ram, was not being pursued, Atlanta police confirmed to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

According to police, a man called 911 around 4 a.m. after his home on Brady Avenue was damaged by gunfire.

“The victim further stated he witnessed two males, one of them discharging a firearm in the air in front of a social establishment,” spokesperson Officer Anthony Grant said in a statement. The business wasn’t specified, Grant said.

The resident said he saw the suspects drive off in a blue Dodge Ram. Officers from Zone 5 were still investigating the gunfire when officers in Zone 2 located a vehicle matching that description wrecked on the interstate ramp, according to Grant.

“Units coordinated together and made the arrest,” he said.

Both the male driver and a passenger were taken into custody, and Grant said a firearm and drugs were also recovered from the pickup truck. Their charges are pending the outcome of an investigation, he said. Their names were not released.

While officers investigated the wreck Monday, the Howell Mill Road ramp was shut down. The scene cleared shortly before 7 a.m., according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center.
