A Cobb County police officer on Monday crashed into a driver, who was wanted in connection with a homicide in Miami, authorities said.

A man wanted in connection with a homicide in South Florida was arrested Monday following a police pursuit in Cobb County, authorities said.

Cobb police received a notification from a license plate reader that identified a Jaguar F-Pace wanted in connection with the homicide in Miami. Officers located the vehicle near Cumberland Mall and attempted a traffic stop, but the driver, identified as 36-year-old Gustavo Alexander Aviles, fled the scene.

A brief chase ensued, and an officer used his patrol car to disable the Jaguar, which struck a pole on Cobb Parkway near Akers Mill Road. A non-lethal shotgun round was used to break the front passenger window and Aviles was apprehended. There was a large police presence at the scene of the crash. Both the officer and Aviles suffered minor injuries.

Aviles, of Miami, was taken to the Cobb County jail following his release from the hospital, according to an incident report.

He is facing charges of fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer, two counts of willful obstruction of a law enforcement officer and several traffic-related violations, jail records show.

Details about the homicide in Miami were not immediately provided.
