A man is in critical condition after being shot outside a residence hall at Clark Atlanta University over the weekend, police said Monday.

Atlanta police responded around 10:50 p.m. Friday to Beckwith Hall, which houses freshman and male transfer students and is situated near the center of campus on Beckwith Street.

At the scene, officers found the victim, who was not publicly identified, suffering from a gunshot wound. He was taken to the hospital for his injuries, police said. Clark Atlanta police said the victim was not a student.

According to investigators, the victim was sitting in front of the residence hall with his girlfriend when at least one man approached and demanded his belongings. Investigators could not say if the shooting was carried out by one or more suspects.

“A dispute occurred between the victim and suspect(s) which led to the suspect(s) revealing a firearm and shooting the victim,” police said. “The suspect(s) fled into a dark-colored vehicle parked on the city street.”

Atlanta officers helped Clark Atlanta police with crowd control and management at the scene. Campus police are leading the investigation into the incident, which they said was not associated with the university’s homecoming weekend.
