A man was struck and killed by a Gwinnett County police vehicle as he crossed an unlit road outside of a crosswalk not long after midnight Monday, according to officials.

Gwinnett police said an officer was on routine patrol and had just gotten off I-85 when he hit a man crossing Beaver Ruin Road near Shackleford Road. There are no streetlights in the area. The man, identified as Martinez Greenlee, 19, of Norcross, was wearing dark clothing and was not in a crosswalk, according to the Georgia State Patrol, which is investigating the crash.

“(The officer) notified dispatch immediately, exited his vehicle immediately and was immediately on scene rendering aid to the individual that was struck by his vehicle,” police spokesperson Cpl. Dustin Martin-Young said at the scene.

Greenlee was rushed to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

Per department policy, the officer has been placed on administrative leave during the GSP investigation, Gwinnett police officials said.
