A North Carolina man who kidnapped a woman in early February, then shot her and a sheriff’s deputy when he was confronted in northeast Georgia, was convicted and sentenced to life in prison Thursday.

Robert Miguel Brodie, 32, of Henderson, North Carolina, was found guilty of kidnapping with bodily injury, aggravated battery, aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime and theft by receiving stolen property, court records show. Brodie was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Brodie was arrested Feb. 8 after exchanging gunfire with Banks County deputies in the parking lot of a Super 8 motel near Commerce, according to the GBI. The state agency conducted an independent investigation into the shooting at the request of the Banks County Sheriff’s Office.

The incident began when a deputy on patrol saw Brodie and the kidnapped woman sleeping in the back seat of a car in the motel parking lot, the GBI said. When the deputy searched for the car’s license plate, it showed Brodie was wanted on a kidnapping charge out of North Carolina.

When deputies tried to wake the sleeping pair, Brodie pulled out a gun and shot the woman, the GBI said. He then exchanged gunfire with two deputies and was shot multiple times. One deputy was hit in the vest and hand. The injured deputy was treated and released from the hospital the same day, according to the GBI.

The following day, Brodie was booked into the Banks County Jail, online records show. Officials did not share further information about the woman’s injuries, but she was in court this week and testified against Brodie, sheriff’s office spokeswoman Maj. Carissa McFaddin told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
