A Gwinnett County inmate died after experiencing a medical emergency at the jail last week, the first such death this year, officials said.

Phillip Antwon Munroe was found unresponsive in his cell at about 2:30 a.m. Jan. 27 during a routine security check in a maximum-security housing unit, according to the sheriff’s office. The medical team rendered aid to Munroe, but he was pronounced dead, deputies said.

No additional details were released about how he died, though the incident remains under investigation by the GBI.

Munroe had been in custody since he was arrested July 6, 2022, on charges of aggravated assault, battery, robbery and hijacking a motor vehicle, the sheriff’s office said.

“To maintain the integrity of the investigation, further details will be disclosed once the case is closed,” officials added. “The Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office extends its deepest condolences to the loved ones of Phillip Antwon Munroe during this difficult time.”
