FRIDAY’S WEATHER: Heavy rain ahead of steep temperature drop overnight

Flood warning issued for Big Creek near Alpharetta, Roswell, Cumming

A wet Friday morning will give way to windy conditions through the afternoon before a steep temperature drop overnight ushers in a much cooler weekend.

“We’ve got a wet morning commute across North Georgia with downpours moving through,” Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Biran Monahan said. “Still a chance for an isolated storm but, overall, the severe weather that was to our west yesterday really weakened.”

Rain has been heavy enough that flood warnings have been issued around metro Atlanta by the National Weather Service. The flood warnings apply to areas around Big Creek near Alpharetta in North Fulton and Forsyth counties.

The days of spring-like high temperatures in the 70s are over as the day cools from the upper 50s early Friday morning into the 30s and below after dark.

“We’ll be in the 50s and in some spots it’ll be falling into the 40s for the afternoon,” Monahan said. “It’s going to be windy, it’s going to be chilly all the way through the day today.”

Friday afternoon will see winds gust steadily above 20 mph to accompany those falling temperatures, though the sun should peek through partly cloudy conditions in the afternoon. The steep temperature dropoff will stick around for the weekend, but it should be clear and sunny for most of Saturday and Sunday. By Sunday afternoon, temperatures will return to the 60s.

“We get about 11 hours of daylight this time of year and, while we start with rain and we start with a chance for isolated storms this morning, it finishes really nice for your Friday afternoon,” Monahan said. “We’ve got six hours of sun in the forecast for later today.”

The weekend’s warming trend will continue through the beginning of the work week, with temperatures again climbing into the 70s Monday-Wednesday, according to Monahan. Some scattered showers may pop up during the week but chances are relatively low for rain across the region next week.
