Escaped fugitive from Massachusetts found in rural Georgia

A fugitive from Massachusetts, who had escaped from a Boston hospital in September, was found walking along a highway in rural Georgia, according to police in a news release.

Darren P. Devine, 30, was arrested by a sheriff’s deputy along Ga. 32 in Brantley County, according to the release.

Devine was wanted on assault charges, including assault with intent to rape, a drug charge and others, according to Boston.com. He also was wanted for escaping from a penal institution, police said.

During an outdoor break at Shattuck Hospital on Sept. 11, Devine climbed over a fence and escaped, Boston.com reported, citing authorities.

“Devine was known by investigators to have a history of violence and an ability to hide and survive in the woods,” according to the release.

Authorities searched for Devine in Massachusetts, Vermont, Maine, North Carolina, Virginia, Florida and along the Canadian border, according to Boston.com.

Earlier in January, authorities learned Devine might be traveling by car with his brother near Savannah, according to the release. Last Thursday, authorities found Jordan Devine, Darren’s brother, in a convenience store, Boston.com reported. Jordan was arrested and charged with impeding an investigation and possession of narcotics.

Darren Devine was tracked to a swamp last weekend. He was found walking on Ga. 32 and arrested Saturday.
