Detectives are investigating a shooting in southwest Atlanta that killed a man believed to be homeless, according to police.

The shooting happened at around 11 a.m. Tuesday at 465 Glenn Street under a bridge, a police spokesman said. That location is about a half-mile from Rosa L. Burney Park in the Mechanicsville neighborhood.

A nearby witness saw the shooting and cooperated with police, who quickly identified a suspect vehicle in Sandy Springs that led them to detain a person of interest, Atlanta homicide commander Lt. Andrew Smith said.

Investigators believe the victim was confronted by someone who got out of a vehicle and fired multiple shots before leaving the area, police said Tuesday afternoon.

“What led up to the shooting, we are not familiar with at this point, but the investigation is evolving,” Smith said.

The victim has not been identified but was likely living under the bridge, Smith said.
