A person was fatally struck by a MARTA train Monday morning at the Garnett station, shutting down rail service at the downtown Atlanta hub for about six hours.

The deadly incident occurred shortly before 8 a.m. after MARTA officials reported a trespasser on the northbound tracks. Power was shut down while law enforcement investigated, and service was not restored until just before 2 p.m., the transit authority said.

The identity of the person killed was not released, and police did not know why they were on the tracks.

Passengers were being bussed between the Oakland City and Peachtree Center stations, and MARTA reported delays up and down the north and south lines. The transit authority also offered passengers an $8 credit for Lyft and Uber while the investigation was active.
