DeKalb County police have opened an investigation into a set of human remains found at a Tucker city park Friday afternoon.
The remains were discovered in the woods between Johns Homestead Park and Rehoboth Baptist Church on Lawrenceville Highway around 12:30 p.m., DeKalb police spokeswoman Michaela Vincent confirmed. The DeKalb County Medical Examiner’s Office will evaluate the remains to determine the identity and cause of death.
They were found by a crew that was surveying land in the area, Vincent said.
The park sits on nearly 50 acres and is centered around the Johns Homestead, a house that dates to the 1830s and is one of the oldest in DeKalb. Rehoboth Baptist Church, located next door, and Rehoboth cemetery were founded on property donated by the Johns family, according to the park’s website.
DeKalb police have remained at the scene throughout the afternoon, according to Channel 2 Action News. Because the investigation is ongoing, police were not able to release more details, Vincent said.
