A man suspected of shooting and killing his wife in their home near Lawrenceville on Thursday morning has been arrested.

Corey Dowdell, 45, contacted authorities just before 11 a.m. to turn himself in, Gwinnett County police spokeswoman Officer Hideshi Valle said in a news release. Dowdell is facing charges of felony murder, aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.

The sound of gunshots took police to the 2600 block of Gloster Mill Drive, where officers found a woman dead inside a home shortly after 4:30 a.m. Police said Dowdell fled the home on foot after the shooting.

Police have not released Dowdell’s wife’s name, but Channel 2 Action News reported that family members identified her as Keisha Dowdell.

From the scene, Valle told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution that police spoke with another adult who called 911. The caller told police they “heard arguing and then shots being fired” from inside the house, she said. No children were present at the time.

Homicide detectives were collecting evidence for much of the morning in the subdivision off Huff Road and had roped off the home with crime scene tape.
