The DeKalb County Courthouse had to be evacuated Thursday afternoon due to power outages in the area, according to county officials.

Debra DeBerry, DeKalb’s clerk of the superior court, tweeted out an alert shortly after 2:15 p.m. that the downtown Decatur courthouse was being evacuated until further notice.

In a news release, the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office indicated an area-wide power outage began at 2 p.m. and caused blackouts throughout the neighborhood. Due to the outage, sheriff’s deputies evacuated the courthouse complex as a safety protocol.

All courts were closed and judges were escorted from the facility without incident, officials said. Inmates in the courthouse at the time were taken back to the DeKalb County jail.

County leaders said Georgia Power estimated power would be restored late Thursday. DeBerry announced the courthouse would resume normal operations at 8:30 Friday morning.
