A person found dead in the back seat of a burning vehicle in northwest Atlanta on Sunday morning had been shot, officials said.

Crews were called just after 7:20 a.m. to a vehicle fire in the 30 block of Wadley Street, according to Atlanta fire spokesperson Anare Holmes. The residential area is near Verbena Street and just north of I-20.

At the scene, firefighters extinguished the blaze before arson investigators found a body in the back seat of the car, officials said. Police said they later determined the victim had been shot several times. Their name was not released.

Officials have not provided the make or model of the vehicle.

In 2022, Georgia Power projected its winter peak electricity demand would grow by about 400 megawatts by 2031. Since then, Georgia has experienced a boom of data centers, which require a large load of electricty to run, and Georgia Power's recent forecast shows peak demand growing by 20 times the 400-megawatt estimate from just three years ago.
