Authorities are asking the public for help after a man found his 71-year-old mother strangled inside her Hampton home Saturday afternoon.

Officers responded to the house on Rosenwald Drive about 12:30 p.m. after receiving a call about a person down, police said in a news release. They arrived to find the body of Katherine Louise Maddux.

An autopsy conducted Monday at the GBI Crime Lab revealed the manner of death was a homicide, Hampton police Chief Derrick Austin said.

Maddux’s death marks the city’s first homicide since 2008.

Maddux lived at the home by herself, Austin said. Her son, who lives next door, went to check on her after not being able to reach her Saturday morning.

“As of now, we’re still trying to come up with a motive because nothing was missing from the house,” Austin said. “It wasn’t ransacked. If anything is missing, we haven’t been able to determine what.”

Detectives are canvassing the area and speaking with neighbors in the hopes of finding a lead in the case, police said.

Anyone with information is asked to call investigators at 770-946-4513 or Crime Stoppers at 404-577-8477.
