A 20-year-old man died after a late-night rollover crash in Oconee County, authorities said.

Between midnight and 6:20 a.m. Monday, Augustus “Gus” Stephen Smith of Watkinsville crashed his 1999 Ford pickup truck along Flat Rock Road, according to the Georgia State Patrol. The wreckage was not discovered until Monday morning.

Investigators said the truck was traveling east when the driver lost control for an unknown reason, the GSP said in a news release. The vehicle left the road and rolled over into a tree.

Smith was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Oconee County Sheriff’s Office posted on Facebook about the incident. The message said, in part, “While we mourn the loss of any life, the loss of one of Oconee’s native sons at such a young age is especially heartbreaking.”
