The teen, who was not identified because of his age, became suspicious of a grey Chevy Sonic that had pulled up near his house, authorities said.

The Charleston County Sheriff's Office said the teen later heard someone trying to break into his family's home and got his mother's gun.

The boy said he fired the gun at a person outside the back door of the house, and the person fired back.

The two alleged burglars, Lamar Anthwan Brown, 31, of Summerville, and Ira Bennett, 28, of North Charleston, then fled the scene, authorities said.

Bennett drove an injured Brown to a medical center and took off, authorities said. Brown died of his gunshot wounds.

Bennett was tracked down and charged with first-degree burglary and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime. Officials said both men had criminal histories, including assault with intent to kill, third-degree burglary, and manufacturing and distributing a controlled substance.

A Colt .45 pistol, not owned by the Ladson family, was found in the backyard of the family’s home, officials said.

The teen's mother was at work during the incident. She told police she had never trained her son to use the gun but had told him he should use it if necessary.
