Just over a year after the April 2014 shooting at a Cobb County FedEx facility that left him critically injured and facing a long road to recovery, Christopher Sparkman has filed a lawsuit against the company.

The suit, filed Monday in Gwinnett County Superior Court, accuses FedEx of negligence and gross negligence.

Sparkman, 29, was the most seriously injured of 19-year-old Geddy Kramer's victims. Kramer shot six employees before fatally shooting himself.

Sparkman, a U.S. Army veteran working as a security guard at the time, was unarmed. He “didn’t stand a chance” when Kramer burst in, barrels blazing, his father-in-law Russell Brannen said.

The lawsuit accuses “FedEx officials of knowing Kramer was mentally unstable before the shooting but failing to intervene,” The Associated Press reported. Sparkman seeks lost wages, medical expenses, compensation for pain and suffering and more. He has already undergone about 40 procedures and faces more in the future.

In a statement, FedEx said the company remains “deeply sympathetic to Mr. Sparkman and his family” but is not responsible for the shooting. The “tragic and unexpected” events of last April “were traumatic for many people, but were not caused by FedEx. Our top priority continues to be providing a safe and secure work environment.”

Sparkman’s wife, Jamie Lynn Sparkman, alluded to the possibility of legal action in a recent post on the website she uses to keep supporters updated.

“With possible litigation in the future, we know that our lives are going to continue to be stressed in all areas, and we thank you all for the support that you all give to us daily,” she wrote.

In her April 29 update posted on the one-year anniversary of the shooting, Jamie Lynn Sparkman asked for prayers for her husband and the family of the man who shot him: “Christopher and I would like to ask you all to join my family in a special prayer for the Kramers, who lost their son (and brother) one year ago today. We are truly sorry for your loss.”
