A University of Georgia student was raped early Friday by someone she thought was an Uber driver, Athens-Clarke County police said.

Just after 3 a.m., officers met with the 25-year-old woman, who said she requested an Uber driver pick her up, spokesman Epifanio Rodriguez said.

“She adds she got into a car she believed was an Uber, but determined midride it was not an Uber,” Rodriguez said. “She asked to be let out of the vehicle but was raped before being released by the driver.”

The woman described the driver as a man, and no vehicle description is available. Police do not know where she was picked up or where the alleged rape occurred.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Lt. Derek Scott at 706-613-3330, ext. 329.
