Nearly a month after a man was arrested and accused of beating his 14-year-old daughter with a belt, his wife was taken into custody on similar charges.

Diego Jorge Diego, 35, was arrested by Hall County deputies June 24, sheriff’s office spokesman Derreck Booth said in a statement. Authorities were called to the home in the 200 block of Williams Street after someone reported an incident where his daughter was beaten with a belt on her back and left with “severe bruising and visible marks,” Booth said.

The incident opened an investigation into child cruelty at the residence, Booth said.

During the investigation, authorities found Catarina Alonzo-Carmelo, 33, of Gainesville, was involved in the incident that left the girl with bruises. Booth said Alonzo-Carmelo beat the girl with a metal studded belt and threw her into furniture, causing a black eye.

Investigators believe there was more than one such incident at the home between April 1 and June 24. Booth said authorities obtained a warrant for Alonzo-Carmelo’s arrest July 16, and she was arrested Friday on a felony first-degree child cruelty charge. She was booked into the Hall County jail, where she remains on a $8,450 bond, records show.

Diego was released from jail June 26.
