Witnesses sought in deadly attack on man outside his home

A man died Thursday after being attacked outside of his home, according to the Oconee County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities said Joseph Kenall Jackson, 19, was attacked near the corner of Whippoorwill Road and Cumberland Drive.

About midnight Tuesday, someone called 911 and reported Jackson returned home with significant injuries. He was taken to Piedmont Athens Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

“The Sheriff's Office is investigating his death as a murder,” the agency said in a Facebook post.

His body was taken to the GBI Crime Lab in Decatur for an autopsy.

Sheriff’s investigators are seeking witnesses of the attack as well as information on any vehicles with unexplained side window damage.

“A large amount of untinted window safety glass was found at the scene,” the sheriff’s office said.
