A Duluth police office said he spotted a Gwinnett County man with “a cellphone up to his face” while driving Sunday night.

After nearly dragging that officer with his truck during a traffic stop, a brief police chase ensued which led to the man being found hiding in a trash can after trying to break into a home, police said.

Marvin Arnold, 32, of Lithonia, now faces 19 charges, including three felonies. A police incident report, obtained by AJC.com Thursday, details what landed Arnold in the Gwinnett County Jail without bond.

During the traffic stop, the officer said he smelled marijuana inside the car, the report said. Arnold allegedly didn’t have his license, and the cop said he provided a false name when asked.

The officer said Arnold was nervous when responding to further questions, and when asked to turn the truck off, he shifted into drive and began to accelerate, the report said. The officer was nearly dragged by the door, but ended up letting go.

Arnold ended up overturning his truck, crashing into a tree in the 3900 block of Howell Ferry Road, the report said. He allegedly ran away, tried to break into a nearby home before hiding in a trash can near the building.

The officer ended up finding him, dumping him out of the trash can and arresting him, the report said. A small plastic bag containing ecstasy was found on him, and he allegedly admitted to taking four of the ecstasy pills before being pulled over.

Once they got Arnold’s real name, police discovered he had an active warrant out of DeKalb County for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and he had his license suspended, the report said.

In total, about 2,000 ecstasy pills and small amounts of cocaine, marijuana and cash were seized from his car, the report said.

The three felonies Arnold faces include fleeing an officer, possession of cocaine with intent to distribute and trafficking methamphetamine, jail records show. His other charges include violating the Georgia Hands Free Act, giving false name and date of birth, DUI, open container, suspended license, hit-and-run, obstruction, possession of marijuana and several traffic offences.
